Getting to know The Duke.

In retrospect these references have one thing in common to me. They all successfully produce a new reality. These creative works are dependant on creator rationalized realities. These are not exact representations of our reality. They are however a considered environment which is orchestrated just as much as the events which occur in them. In fact, how they are orchestrated also influences how interaction occurs in them. Example: In Fist Full of Dollars we find Clint in a town with two family bosses. As a result Clint is able to play these two families off of each other for money and the story ensues. Note however the level of abstraction that occurred. Surely in any town there are more than two centres of power. Additionally the setting was chosen in a place and time of lawlessness… or rather the law of the gun. In this sense the creator is setting a stage which becomes obvious in film and stage creations, but has been greatly overlooked in videogames and print. For instance in Katamari Damacy, the world is conceived as a composite of smaller parts which can be rolled up to produce a new mass in the heavens. It’s a simple idea, which must have required a tremendous amount of restraint and consideration to maintain that level of simplicity. And it is because the final product is done right that we take it for granted. It is done so well that we cannot think of how else it could have been done. But you can imagine that the human mind wants to build, expand and extrapolate things. It wants conclusions, closure and complexity. The creator has to continuously clarify in their own mind what the idea is and if it is ‘true’ to the initial intent. In addition to this dilemma is the thought that all these creative endeavours started off as different ideas. The idea could have been smaller or more complex. It would be a tough argument to suggest that these ideas came out exactly how they were initially conceived. We all have to deal with change. It is how we deal with that turbulent gauntlet that I am interested in.
